About – Kjettil

WELCOME

I am Kjettil. A Dutch filmmaker and photographer based in Rotterdam, with a keen eye for creating aesthetically sharp and atmospheric imagery. However, my actual view on the moving world around me is equally cutting. I am continuously on the lookout for fresh influences and use my audiovisual work dynamically to reflect on society.

In 2021, I graduated as an Audiovisual Maker from Cibap in Zwolle. During my internships, I gained experience in the field with various production companies. After completing my studies, I worked as a freelance filmmaker for a year, serving as a camera operator and assistant on several sets, as well as an editor in post-production. Additionally, I have been producing my own autonomous and commercial projects, which are showcased here.

Currently I am studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy, where I am broadening and refining my conceptual skills. I am experimenting with interactive media, delving into politically engaged topics and learning new research methodologies. These experiences strengthen the conceptual choices in my work as a creative, providing a solid foundation for my projects and helping to substantiate my work.

VISION

There is a significant gap between how we think and how we can express ourselves. Oftentimes, much is lost in translation. For me, film is the medium that most closely represents my thoughts. But it's not just about thinking; it's mainly about feeling. Emotion inspires me and drives my autonomous work. That's where I see the beauty of film: the portrayal of a feeling can convey, evoke or create something completely new. As interpretation always is a crucial factor, I believe.

Environmental awareness is a recurring theme in my work. I like reflecting and philosophizing on how we, as humans, are influenced by the world around us–how this influence arises, shifts, bends, evolves and changes us all. For example in my works ‘No Mask’ and ‘Window’, I explore how a place or event can alter our paths. Confronting this and understanding the effect we have on the world around us can bring about greater consciousness within an individual. I believe this awareness will help us understand each other better.
