SCARED / SCARRED [2020]
During the process of creating this experimental short film, I explored the concept of identity from various angles to see what new perspectives might emerge. After some philosophical contemplation, I concluded that one way to view identity is as a game. By seeing social constructs and systems in society as part of a game and approaching identity with this mindset, everything takes on a different and often interesting perspective, which I depicted in this film.
The film starts in our modern-day society, displaying natural elements that represent a blank gaze on the world. Gradually, it transitions into a parallel digital environment, referring to society, where the game is introduced and immediately played.
In this game, there are different points you can collect that form your identity and prestige status. Although hard work is rewarded, the game is not always fair. Some players start with a significant advantage, giving them a head start. The film also touches upon 'cheat codes'—a metaphor for lawbreaking—and the pitfalls they entail.
The idea is that you can get scars on your identity, but they won’t show on your identification card. This focuses on the contrast between ‘good’ and ‘bad’. This stark contrast stood out to me during my philosophical exploration. While in reality, the line between good and bad is often much thinner in my experience, as the human aspect is often seriously considered when judging actions.
